Effective Solutions for Managing Turbidity and Aquatic Weeds in your Dam

Q. We have a pond that has been invaded by aquatic weeds and we would like to reduce or eradicate them? Pond is significant frog habitat.

ANSWER

Based on the images you’ve shared, your dam appears to be grappling with a couple of issues that require imediate attention.

The first concern is high turbidity in the water, which is primarily caused by mud particles possibly washed in following heavy rainfall. High turbidity can hinder light penetration and affect the aquatic ecosystem, making it essential to address this problem before moving on to weed control.

To clear the turbidity, it’s recommended to use Clear Dam flocculant. The application rate is 5L for every 250,000L of water, and for optimal results, the flocculant should be sprayed evenly across the surface of the dam. Once the water is cleared and visibility is restored, you’ll be better equiped to tackle the weed problems effectively.

The second issue stems from the presence of two types of aquatic weeds in you dam: Potamogeton, a submerged species, and Spikerush, which is classified as an emergent weed. For the effective treatment of both, we recommend using AQ200, our approved aquatic herbicide.

When targeting Spikerush, it’s vital to combine AQ200 with a wetting agent to enhance effectiveness, while using AQ200 on its own is recommended for Potamogeton.

When applying AQ200, make sure to mix the specified amount with water (and the wetting agent for Spikerush) and spray it uniformly over the targeted weeds.

Importantly, be aware of the strict 10-day withholding period post-application before the water can be deemed safe for drinking, irrigation, and livestock. The environmentally freindly nature of AQ200 allows it to neutralise upon contact with soil, mitigating any harmful buildup in the ecosystem. This is particularly crucial, as clear water is paramount to ensure safe and effective application. As one of the few herbicides approved for aquatic use, AQ200 poses minimal risk to fish, frogs, and other aquatic wildlife, making it a preferable choice for your dam.
