How to Clear a New Pond: Fixing Cloudy Water in a 50,000 – 70,000 Litre Dam
Q. What product would you suggest to clear up a new pond around 50-70 thousand litres?
ANSWER
If you’ve just put in a new pond or dam and the water has turned cloudy or muddy, it’s one of the most common issues.
The Real Cause of Cloudy Water: Unstable Banks
Before reaching for any water-clearing product, it’s worth looking at what’s actually causing the murkiness. In many new dams, the problem isn’t algae or organic matter it’s erosion.
If the edges of the dam haven’t been properly stabilised, soil will keep washing into the water every time it rains, whenever there’s wave action, or even just from wind and general settling. This constant influx of fine sediment is what keeps the water looking cloudy no matter how much treatment you apply. Treating the water without fixing the banks is a bit like mopping the floor while the tap’s still running.
Step 1: Stabilise the Edges
The first and most important step is firming up the banks of the dam. A reliable method is:
Install geofabric along the edges to hold the soil in place and prevent it from washing away.
– Cover the geofabric with crushed rock or sand, which adds weight, protects the fabric from UV and physical wear, and gives the bank a stable, erosion-resistant surface.
This combination stops the ongoing cycle of erosion and re-clouding, giving any water treatment you apply afterward a real chance to work.
Step 2: Apply a Flocculant
Once the banks are stabilised, it’s time to deal with the suspended particles already in the water. This is where a flocculant comes in. Flocculants work by causing the fine particles suspended in the water to clump together (flocculate) and settle out, leaving clearer water behind.
A few things to keep in mind:
– Turbid water may need multiple treatments. If the water is very cloudy or muddy, don’t expect one application to do the job. It’s common to need several treatments before the water fully clears.
– Space applications out. Allow around 5 days between treatments so each application has time to work and settle before adding more.
How Much Flocculant Do You Need?
Dosage is based on volume. For a dam holding approximately 70,000 litres, the recommended application rate when using Clear Dam is 1L per 50,000L of water.
Steps to Follow
1. Stabilise the banks first with geofabric, crushed rock, or sand, this stops ongoing erosion and sediment runoff.
2. Apply Clear Dam flocculant to clear existing turbidity, expecting to repeat the process – works best in water with a pH above 9 or below 6.
3. Space treatments 5 days apart.
4. For a 70,000 litre dam, use approximately 1.4L of Clear Dam – follow label instructions
Get the banks sorted first, and the water clarity will follow.
