Why is My Water Turning Orange? Causes & Treatment
Q. An orange colour in the water typically indicates moderate to high iron levels. When iron is dissolved in the water it can give the water a rusty or orange appearance. If there is also an odour present, this could indicate the presence of iron-related algae or bacteria.
ANSWER
What Causes Orange Water?
An orange colour in water typically indicates moderate to high levels of dissolved iron. When iron is present in its dissolved form, it remains invisible—but once it begins to oxidise, it takes on that familiar rusty or orange appearance.
If there’s also an unpleasant odour, this may point to the presence of iron-related bacteria or algae, which thrive in these conditions and can worsen both water clarity and smell.
Treatment Options for Orange Water
Depending on your setup and goals, there are a few ways to improve water quality and restore a more natural appearance.
1. Aeration
Aeration is one of the most effective long-term solutions.
By increasing oxygen levels in the water, aeration helps oxidise dissolved iron, causing it to precipitate (solidify) and settle out of the water column. This reduces the orange tint and improves overall clarity. Once the iron has settled, any remaining algae can be treated with a suitable algaecide.
Installing an aeration system can make a significant difference, especially in larger dams.
2. Flocculation + Algaecide Treatment
For faster visual improvement, a flocculation and treatment approach works well.
Start by applying a flocculent such as Aquatic Clear Drop at a rate of 40 kg per megalitre. This binds to dissolved iron particles and helps them settle to the bottom.
After allowing 5–7 days for settling and improved clarity, follow up with an algaecide such as Coptrol at 5 L per megalitre to target any algae present.
This two-step method is particularly effective when both iron discolouration and algae are contributing to the problem.
3. Lake Dye + Algaecide
If aesthetics are a priority, using a lake dye can help quickly improve the appearance of your water.
A product like Aquatic Blue can mask the orange tint while also reducing light penetration. This limits the conditions algae need to grow, helping prevent further issues.
For best results, combine lake dye with an algaecide like Coptrol to actively treat existing algae while maintaining a cleaner look.
Supporting Overall Water Health
In addition to the treatments above, improving the biological balance of your dam can help reduce odours and long-term buildup.
Applying beneficial bacteria, such as Muck Breaker, assists in breaking down organic matter that can contribute to poor water quality and unpleasant smells.
Orange water can be frustrating, but it’s usually a manageable issue once you understand the cause. Whether you choose aeration, flocculation, or a combination approach, addressing both the iron content and any biological activity will give you the best results.
