How to Use Coptrol Algaecide: A Comprehensive Guide

When it comes to effectively controlling algae, using Coptrol algaecide is crucial. Ensure you follow label directions precisely for optimal results.

Methods of Applying Coptrol Algaecide:

Coptrol can be applied in various ways once appropriately diluted. Choose the method that suits your needs:

1. Direct Application: Dilute Coptrol as required and apply directly using a bucket, watering can, knapsack sprayer, horticulture sprayer, or firefighter pump from the bank. You can also apply it from boats or aircraft for efficient coverage. In high-volume treatments like flood irrigation water, you can even drip Coptrol directly into flowing water.
2. Distinguishing Aquatic Plants: It’s essential to note that Coptrol is specifically designed for algae control and does not affect aquatic plants. Common aquatic plants like Duckweed, Azolla, and Salvinia are often mistaken for algae. For controlling aquatic weeds, explore our range of products.

Where to Use, How Much to Use, and How to Apply:

Ensure you’re using the right quantity and method for your specific water body:

• Tanks and Troughs: Apply 2mL to 5mL of Coptrol per 1,000L of water to be treated. Dilute the measured amount at a ratio of 1-part Coptrol to 10 or 20 parts water. Once diluted, apply evenly over the water’s surface. In most cases, a single application is sufficient. For severe algal blooms, consider an additional treatment after 10 to 14 days.
• Dams, Ponds, and Water Impoundments: Apply 4.2L to 8.4L of Coptrol per 1,000 square meters of water surface area at an average depth of 1m or greater. Alternatively, use 5L to 10L of Coptrol per 1ML of water. For best results, apply Coptrol on a calm, wind-free day with bright sunlight, ensuring even coverage of the water’s surface.

Additional Instructions:

• Start by treating the shoreline to prevent trapping fish in the shallows.
• Only treat one-third of the water at a time to avoid oxygen depletion.
• Allow 10-15 days per treatment for oxygen levels to recover.

Safety Measures:

• Protection of Fish, Livestock, Wildlife, and Others: Take note of specific precautions to protect aquatic life. DO NOT treat water containing trout with low carbonate hardness (below 50ppm). Avoid treatment if the water’s surface temperature is below 16°C. For dams used for drinking purposes by sheep grazing on RAGWORT, refrain from using Coptrol. If large numbers of waterfowl are foraging on filamentous algae, exercise caution and consider alternative methods.

How does Coptrol work?

Coptrol is an aquatic algaecide. When applied to a body of water, the algae present actively absorb Coptrol for its nutritional value. Once absorbed through the cell wall, the digestive enzymes in the algae cells break down the Coptrol compound, releasing the active constituent inside the algae cell to effectively eliminate it.

Can I Use Chlorine to Kill Algae?

Chlorine is not an effective method for killing algae. It is primarily used for bacteria treatment or sterilization and does not provide a high kill rate for algae.

Is Algae Harmful to Humans and Livestock?

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), especially cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), can be toxic to humans and other animals. Algae are microscopic organisms that thrive in aquatic environments and produce energy through photosynthesis. In excess, they become visible to the naked eye, leading to algal blooms of varying colours.

HABs can result from environmental factors such as increased temperature, high nutrient levels (Nitrogen or Phosphorus), abundant sunlight, and still or low-flowing water. These events can have severe health effects on humans and animals, including general paralysis, gastrointestinal illness, respiratory problems, liver damage, and even death.
