Algae Identification
Discover what types of algae you may need to watch out for in your waterbody, or identify existing algae and the treatments for them.
There are three dominant categories of freshwater algae that you are most likely to come across:
Macro Algae
Macro algae are large, multicellular organisms that occur in lakes, ponds, streams and rivers. Some freshwater macro algae appear leafy or branched, and are often mistaken for aquatic weeds. These macro algae typically anchor themselves to substrates such as rocks, sediment or aquatic vegetation.
Micro Algae
Freshwater micro algae are often single-celled organisms that are invisible to the naked eye. Under certain conditions, some species of micro algae can proliferate excessively, leading to harmful algal blooms. These blooms can appear like an oil slick across the surface of the water.
Filamentous algae
Freshwater filamentous algae are a type of algae characterised by their long, thread-like structures. These algae typically form dense mats or strands in freshwater environments such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams.
