Coptrol™ - where to use it

How much to use

Coptrol application can vary depending on how much algae you are dealing with. For most applications the amount required depends on the surface area of your water body.
We recommend using this calculator to work out your surface area and the recommended amount of Coptrol required.

How to apply the product

Coptrol should be applied evenly across the surface of your water body using a spray tank. The choice of spray tank will depend on the amount of product needing to be applied.
We recommend using gloves, coveralls, masks and goggles when applying Coptrol.
Spray tank options:
Watering Can
less than 1L
Pack sprayer
1L - 10L
Spray tank
more than 10L

What results to expect

Results with Coptrol can be seen within 3 - 10 days.
First algae will change colour before slowly breaking down and disappearing. Your water will continally become clearer as this is happening. If after 10 days the algae is still present a second application of Coptrol is recommended.
Maintenance
Coptrol can be coninually applied monthly as an algae deterant. Simply half the amount used in this initial treatment. Products like Aquatic Blue and Aeration Fountains will also help keep algae from returning.

  • Why choose Coptrol?

Coptrol is a specialised aquatic algaecide that provides safe, effective, and fast control of algae in a wide variety of water bodies. It is APVMA approved (Reg. No. 31030), non-toxic to fish, livestock, plants, and humans when used as directed, and safe to use in potable water supplies, irrigation, and stock watering. It offers targeted action against algae without damaging pumps, equipment, or the environment.

  • Does Coptrol work in all water types?

Yes, Coptrol is effective in most fresh and potable water types, including dams, ponds, reservoirs, irrigation systems, stock troughs, and even hydroponics.

    However, for best results:

    • Water should have a carbonate hardness above 50 ppm if fish are present.
    • Works best in water temperatures above 16 °C.

It is not recommended for extremely soft or acidic waters that may stress fish
    (especially trout).

  • How long does it take to see results with Coptrol?

Coptrol typically kills algae within 72 hours of application. In heavy infestations, full effects may take up to 10–14 days, and follow-up treatments may be needed.

  • What are the advantages of using Coptrol over other products?

    • Safety: Safe for humans, fish, livestock, wildlife, crops, and pastures when used as directed.
    • Non-corrosive: Unlike some alternatives, it won’t damage pumps, irrigation systems, fountains.
    • Broad spectrum: Effective against all major types of algae, including cyanobacteria, green algae, and structured algae.
    • No withholding period: Treated water can be used immediately for drinking, irrigation, or livestock.
    • Targeted action: Unlike chlorine or general disinfectants, Coptrol acts specifically on algae without harming other aquatic life.
  • Are there any safety assurances when using Coptrol?

Yes. Coptrol is Australian-made, APVMA registered, and extensively tested for environmental and livestock safety.

When applied according to label instructions, it is:

    • Non-toxic to humans, animals, and aquatic life.
    • Safe for irrigation of crops and turf.
    • Safe for use in potable water supplies.
  • What is the best method to apply Coptrol?

    • Apply on a clear, calm, sunny day to maximise effectiveness.
    • Dilute Coptrol in water (1 part Coptrol to 10–20 parts water) for even distribution.
    • Spray or pour directly over the water surface, starting along the shoreline.
    • For large water bodies, treat only one-third at a time, waiting 10–15 days between treatments to allow oxygen levels to recover.
    • Stir or agitate smaller tanks/troughs after dosing for uniform coverage.
  • What types of algae does Coptrol target?

Coptrol is effective against all major groups of algae, including:

    • Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria): e.g. Microcystis, Anabaena, Oscillatoria.
    • Green algae: e.g., Chlorella, Spirogyra, Cladophora, Oedogonium.
    • Flagellates: e.g., Euglena.
    • Plant-structured algae: e.g., Chara, Phormidium.
  • Will Coptrol harm fish?

No, not when used as directed. Coptrol is safe for fish and aquatic life provided:

    • Water hardness is >50 ppm carbonate.
    • Water temperature is >16 °C.
    • Only one-third of the water body is treated at a time to prevent oxygen depletion from decaying algae.
  • What is the process Coptrol uses to remove algae?

Algae absorb Coptrol mistaking it for a nutrient. Once inside, enzymes break down the
copper-chelate compound, releasing active copper ions that disrupt cellular processes,
effectively killing the algae from within. Dead algae then degrade naturally in the water.
Aquatic plants will not be affected by this process.

  • Is Coptrol better at killing algae than chlorine?

    Yes.

    • Chlorine is a harsh oxidising agent that can harm fish, plants, and equipment, and it dissipates quickly in sunlight.
    • Coptrol is specifically formulated for algae control, offering more targeted, longer- lasting, and safer results without the risks associated with chlorine.
  • Is Coptrol harmful to humans or livestock?

No. When applied correctly, Coptrol is:

    • Safe for humans: potable water can be consumed immediately after treatment.
    • Safe for livestock and pets: they can drink treated water without delay.
    • Safe for irrigation: no withholding period is required for crops or turf.

Works really well!

Followed the instructions and put in 5ml on the first treatment, and the algae reduced tremendously. Since then we put in 2.5mls the second week and another 2.5mls the 3rd week. The pond is the best we have ever seen it, you can see the bottom of the pond and the water is very clear with no elgae. there has been no effect on the fish whatsoever... the best product we have found!

Works quickly but kills tadpoles

Sploshed 500ml in yesterday in line with the directions and volume of water. The algae is dying and the water looks a bit clearer. However, the tadpoles are floating - dead. I assumed, wrongly it seems, that all aquatic life would be safe but alas not. Bit sad about the taddies.

Coptrol™

For the safe control of all types of algae in all types of water bodies.
coptrol-15l-and-1l-png

How it works

Algae actively seek out and absorb Coptrol for its nutritional value. Once absorbed through their cell wall digestive enzymes within the algae cell breaks down the copper chelate and releases the active constituent inside the algae cell to kill it. Coptrol is solely used for the control of algae and does not control aquatic plants.

Method of application

Once diluted, Coptrol can be applied directly from a bucket, watering can, knapsack sprayer, horticulture sprayer, firefighter pump sprayed from the bank, or from boats or aircrafts.

Alternatively Coptrol can be dripped directly into flowing water in high volume treatments such as flood irrigation water.
