How does Barley Straw work?
Decomposing barley straw releases a cocktail of toxins which are harmful to the growth of algae9, yet completely safe for people & pets. The high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of barley straw means that when it breaks down it uses available nitrogen and phosphorus in the water. This reduces conditions favourable to algae growth10. It has been shown that barley straw is active against a range of algae including unicellular and filamentous forms8. Toxicity of rotting barley straw is selective for algae so other plant forms in or near the treated water are not harmed16.
Will Barley Straw harm fish/livestock/pets/wildlife?
No, Barley Straw does not harm fish, livestock, pets or wildlife. It is an all-natural, environmentally friendly way to keep your water clarified.
What do I do with used Barley Straw Bales?
Used Barley Straw Bales can be composted or turned into mulch!
What is the difference between Barley Straw Bales and Barley Straw Extract?
Barley Straw Bales are in their natural state, where as Barley Straw Extract is the concentrated liquid version of the bales. When Barley Straw is activated in water, it slowly begins to decompose and releases a chemical signature. Barley Straw Extract is the liquid form of the bales which is more concentrated and clears water must faster than the bales.
